Sri Lanka Seeks to Strengthen Economic Relations with Liberia.
Sri Lankan Ambassador Kana Kananathan met with President Joseph Boakai of the Republic of Liberia at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia yesterday afternoon.
This meeting marks the first bilateral engagement by a Sri Lankan diplomat, focusing on strengthening political, trade, investment, and people-to-people connections.
President Boakai described the meeting as a historic and significant milestone in the bilateral relations between Liberia and Sri Lanka, celebrating fifteen years of diplomatic ties.
President Boakai praised President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his swift and effective measures in stabilizing Sri Lanka’s economy. Following the significant economic crisis of 2022, President Wickremesinghe took decisive steps to address the issues head-on, demonstrating leadership and strategic initiatives that have been instrumental in the country’s recovery, economic stability, and the restoration of public confidence.
The President of Liberia acknowledged these efforts, noting the remarkable turnaround achieved in a short period. This commendation highlights the importance of strong and decisive leadership during crises, with President Wickremesinghe’s actions serving as a commendable example for other nations facing similar challenges.
Ambassador Kananathan expressed his commitment to enhancing economic cooperation, promoting trade and investment, and fostering sustainable development between the two countries.
The meeting provided an opportunity for high-level interaction between Sri Lanka and Liberia, reinforcing the bonds of friendship and collaboration. Both President Boakai and Ambassador Kananathan agreed to work together to enhance mutual trust and cooperation.
Kananathan was also invited by the Government of Liberia to serve as an election observer for the recently concluded Presidential Elections held in October 2023. Liberia’s main exports include rubber, diamonds, gold, and iron ore.
