A high-ranking delegation from Senegal, led by Dr. Mabouba Diagne, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock, visited Liberia to garner the government’s support for Mr. Amadou Hott’s candidacy as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The Senegalese delegation was warmly welcomed by Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and held strategic meetings with Hon. Jeremiah K. Koung, Vice President of Liberia, and Mr. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Minister of Finance and Development Planning.

During the discussions, Dr. Diagne emphasized the enduring historical and diplomatic ties between Liberia and Senegal, highlighting the shared commitment to regional cooperation and economic development within the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“Liberia and Senegal share a profound bond in the sub-region. It is crucial that we continue to support one another in advancing Africa’s development,” Dr. Diagne remarked. He also expressed gratitude for Liberia’s hospitality and commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.

“This visit solidifies the partnership between our nations. We are deeply appreciative of the fruitful discussions and are hopeful for Liberia’s support of Mr. Hott’s candidacy, which we believe will drive Africa’s development agenda forward,” he added.

Mr. Amadou Hott, who accompanied the delegation, outlined his vision for the African Development Bank. As a seasoned investment banker with extensive experience across Africa, Mr. Hott stressed the importance of strengthening the AfDB’s financial base to drive private-sector investments—a critical engine of economic growth on the continent.

“My goal is to fortify the African Development Bank’s financial capacity to support private-sector initiatives, which are essential for Africa’s economic transformation,” Mr. Hott explained. He further emphasized leveraging the AfDB’s resources to attract global partnerships, promote economic inclusion, and position Africa as a hub for international investment.

“With my expertise, I intend to make the AfDB a catalyst for sustainable development and inclusive growth, especially for low-income countries,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., Foreign Minister Nyanti reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to strengthening its longstanding ties with Senegal and advancing shared goals within Africa.

“Liberia and Senegal have a robust partnership rooted in mutual respect and collaboration. We welcome this opportunity to discuss initiatives that will benefit both our nations and the broader African continent,” she noted.

In response to the delegation’s appeal, Foreign Minister Nyanti commended Mr. Hott’s qualifications and vision, assuring the Senegalese team that Liberia’s decision would be communicated following consultations.

Additionally, Minister Nyanti sought Senegal’s support for Liberia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the importance of Pan-African solidarity.

“In the spirit of partnership, we kindly request Senegal’s support for Liberia’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council. Together, we can amplify Africa’s voice on the global stage,” she stated.

The visit underscores the significance of collaboration among African nations to achieve shared development goals. Liberia and Senegal have consistently demonstrated their commitment to regional integration and economic progress through platforms such as ECOWAS and the African Union. The ongoing dialogue highlights the potential for further strengthening partnerships to advance Africa’s collective aspirations.
