ABS and Liberian Registry Approve Innovative Ammonia Carrier Design by HD Hyundai and Capital Gas, Featuring Amogy’s Technology

Today at Posidonia 2024, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Liberian Registry announced their approval in principle (AiP) for a groundbreaking very large ammonia carrier (VLAC) which was designed by both HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Capital Gas Ship Management. This cutting-edge vessel design integrates Amogy’s carbon-free ammonia-to-electric power system, representing a significant advancement in sustainable maritime technology.

The collaboration between Amogy, ABS, the Liberian Registry, HHI, and Capital Gas resulted in the design of a 93K CBM ammonia carrier. Amogy’s system provides approximately 1400 kW of auxiliary power, equivalent to a diesel generator, by splitting liquid ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen and funneling the hydrogen into a fuel cell, thereby generating high-performance, carbon-free power.

The AiPs from ABS and the Liberian Registry validate the feasibility of Amogy’s technology for use on a very large ammonia carrier, in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, stated: “ABS is proud to leverage our expertise as the world’s leading classification society for gas carriers to support the development of next-generation vessels. With today’s rapid technological advancements, class support is crucial. Ensuring safety in the maritime industry is essential as we transition to clean energy.”

Thomas Klenum, Executive Vice President for Innovation & Regulatory Affairs of the Liberian Registry, added: “The IMO GHG Strategy adopted last year by MEPC 80 set ambitious targets for international shipping to reach net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Achieving this requires innovative and sustainable solutions, as demonstrated by this project. Integrating Amogy’s system into HHI’s 93K VLAC design significantly contributes to our goal of net-zero GHG emissions, and we are proud to award the AiP.”

Mr. Seung-Ho Jeon, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, highlighted: “With tightening international environmental regulations and increasing demand for high-value, eco-friendly ships, ammonia is emerging as a prominent carbon-free fuel. This project has thoroughly analyzed the safety of fuel cells on a very large ammonia carrier, advancing us towards the IMO’s 2050 net-zero GHG emission strategy. We are excited to continue our collaboration to promote sustainable maritime technology.”

Miltos Zisis, Managing Director of Capital Gas Ship Management, stated: “Ammonia is essential for achieving ‘net zero’ emissions. Our forward-thinking approach embraces innovative solutions that emphasize sustainability.”

Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy, commented: “Receiving AiPs from ABS and the Liberian Registry for our ammonia-to-power system integration is a critical milestone for deploying our technology. We look forward to ongoing collaboration to advance ammonia-powered solutions in the maritime industry.”
